Preity’s officially back in films

I’m officially back in films , says Bollywood beauty Preity Zinta, who wants to see Team India kissing the World Cup trophy

Back To Basics
All her fans wondered if Preity Zinta had bid goodbye to films when she chose IPL and studies over Bollywood. But if you ask her today, she hadn’t really. “I just took an 18 months off from films. And I knew I would be back to do what I was originally famous for – films. And yeah, I am back to work,” she told us on her recent city visit. “Apart from ” Guinness World Record Ab India Todega”, I am shooting for commercials and considering a film script. You will see me in a movie soon. I am hearing some great scripts, meeting people with whom I want to work again. Now, I have all the time and the inclination. I had actually lost the interest sometime ago,” she explained.

I Am My Own Factory

Before we could throw at her another question, she popped up in between and said, “You know, sometime back, a journalist asked me, ‘what really were you doing in cricket?’ I answered, do you take up another job as a journalist or you are just a journalist. When I was doing cricket, I was just doing cricket. As an actor, I am my own factory, going on the sets everyday. I am a focussed person. It’s not possible to do two things amazingly well at the same time. And now, as I said, I’m officially back to the same grind, with just a little bit of cricket thrown in between.”

World cup? No. Ipl? Yes.
So, would she be seen at Mohali in the Indo-Pak clash today or, hopefully, if India wins, cheering for India in the World Cup finals? “I have a very little interest in the World Cup. But if you ask me IPL, the answer is yes, with a big nod. But I really want to see Team India holding the winning trophy in their hands and kissing it,” she laughed. Any preference for any cricketer? “All my preferences to all my Kings XI Punjab players. I give them all my good energies and love to get home the IPL trophy. No one in particular.”

Films, Gym & Exams
But what after Harvard? Nothing really… “No, I have used my knowledge, logic, experience, whatever I had learnt there in whatever I am doing now. Acting is one of the toughest jobs. It’s not easy as everyone thinks. Preparation for a film is equally tough like getting prepared for your exams. Right now, I am busy hitting the gym every morning, which is like half preparation for me (laughs).”

I’m enjoying being single: Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta was spotted with a phirang at a party on Wednesday night. This is the second time in a fortnight that the actress had stepped out with him.
Naturally, speculation is rife if the actress is dating again. Post her break-up with Ness Wadia, the actress hasn’t been involved with another guy. Preity told TOI, “I’m am single and the man you are talking about is Paul, a producer. I was with Ambika Hinduja too at the party.
I don’t know why people ask me questions whenever they see me with a man. I will flaunt my man when I’m actually seeing someone. As of now, I’m enjoying my singledom.” Mystery solved.

I used to beat up boys: Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta has been away from screens for almost two years. And she says it was a deliberate move as she was concentrating on strengthening her cricket business. And as she decided to finally make her way back to entertainment she has chosen it will be through her debut TV show Guinness World Record: Ab India Todega. The show kicks off today – Friday, March 18 and the ever effervescent actress spoke to us about her TV stint, working in films and some bits about her personal life.

Guinness World Records marks your entry into TV but this is not first show offered to you. What kept you off TV for so long?
For the last two years my focus was only cricket. My job was to take care of a startup and hence I did not want to take up any films or TV. I did get offered a lot of TV shows but I don’t enjoy going to dance shows as a judge because neither am I the best dancer on the planet and neither does it inspire me. GBR excited me. And 2011 was supposed to be my comeback year. All my filmmaker friends were asking how long I am going to stay away!

Your decision to stay away was rather spontaneous!
Yes my decision to jump into cricket at the peak of my career and staying out of films for so long is rather spontaneous. That’s how I got into films too. I remember Shekhar Kapur lecturing on what it is like to be an actress and a star.

What got you so excited about this TV Show?
The fact that Indians were going to break records worldwide and that this was a global platform and it was going to put me face to face with real people and not stars! Also I love adventure. I have done everything from bungee jumping to scuba diving to sky diving. I have done karate, rife-shooting, horse riding – I have been more of a tomboy. So I think this show suited me. I would have felt suffocated if I was supposed to dress up and sit.

Tell us more about the tomboy that you were?
I think I am the only heroine who has a fracture or a cut or a bruise or a tape on all her pictures from childhood. I don’t want to show those photographs to anyone but they had once been shown on a show called Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai where my friends betrayed me and gave away all information!

And how did you injure yourself so often?
Beating up boys! The age difference between me and my elder brother and me and my younger brother is one and half years. And till the age 12-13 a girl is like a boy only, especially if she grows up with boys! You know, I learnt to be say things right on a person’s face from guys. I sort out things there and then and forget it, unlike other women who keep silent and keep it inside them.

Have you beaten guys after growing up?
Yes I have. In Delhi… Oh yes! I have done it once in Mumbai too. But then you should also know how to run when you hit someone. Don’t wait there and be a commando!

Getting back to work, how different is shooting for TV when compared to film?
At a film set you are forever waiting for your shot. Whereas in TV you have to wait hours before you get a break so that you can go to the loo! It is standing constantly on your feet. And also you don’t know what to say when people say something to you. If somebody says something and puts you in a spot you can’t do anything!

What do you mean by ‘put you in a spot’?
Sometimes the people who come to the show are really cheeky and ask things that a journalist would never ask. But you can’t say anything to them. I hope Miditech (the production company) has not taken my close-ups on such situations as I would wait for someone to cut the shot. But of course there would be no cuts as this is a TV show so things would just roll.

Have you told them to edit away such moments?
Of course I have told them. But do you think they will listen to me? See I follow a simple rule – When you sign me as an actress, don’t teach me how to act. Just show me the direction. Similarly when I don’t have to teach people how to do thing when they have been working in TV for 20 years!

And how do you emotionally deal with situations when you have participants shoving knives into their mouth?
I freak out leaving my mouth open! There is this one guy who put swords into his mouth. While he was doing it he had tears coming out and I was a bit scared. But I guess it is mind over matter! You realize there is so much to human resistance than what we know. During the Kargil war there was this guy who got shot eight times at 23000 feet and after that he went up and down that mountain rescuing people and still survived. And if you put that into a movie you will think it’s too filmy. I got to know about this as I had researched Kargil before doing Lakshya.

Talking about yourself, you look fitter since we last saw you.
Yes I have been working on myself since I decided to get back to entertainment. When you are acting and in front of the camera and you know you have to wear a short skirt or your midriff is showing you don’t want to be looking bad. But in cricket it was all about wearing jeans a t-shirt. I had put on seven kilos!

Finally, any details on the movies?
There some very cool ones but the producers will announce.

Preity pilots plane, spans new skies

Actor Preity Zinta has just fulfilled her dream of flying an aeroplane. Zinta, 36, who is hosting Guinness World Records — Ab India Todega on Colors, got the opportunity recently when Capt Anil Thapar was attempting to break the record of ‘Most balloons released by aeroplane ribbon cut’.
Zinta co-piloted an X-Air and single-handedly manoeuvred it for a long stretch on her own. “Preity was very excited about the flight. Before taking off, she prayed and said, “Mom, I love you”. She has done some flying earlier, and it all went very smooth,” says Thapar.
Zinta is thrilled about the show, which hits the screen on March 18. “This year was always going to be the year for me to return to my core business, entertainment. Here I am, on the verge of making my small screen debut, followed by film assignments after IPL 4 wraps up,” she says. “It’s a win-win situation for me. I’ll be on TV hosting my show, and on field I will be cheering for my team, Kings XI Punjab.”
Zinta had been lying low since the last two years. “I had nearly shut shop. In the middle of a court case and a broken relationship (with Wadia), I was mentally not prepared,” she admits.

Yuvraj's still a friend: Preity

The IPL season kicks off in less than a month and there are a lot of changes this season.

One of them is that Yuvraj Singh will now bat for his new team from Pune and not for Preity Zinta's Punjab team. The actress and her players return to IPL 4 with a brave face, but the fact is that they've lost out on quite a few of their old players.

They finished bottom in the last season and with no marquee players in the team this time, everyone is wondering about their game plan. They sure will miss Yuvraj, Irfan Pathan and Bret Lee. However, the spunky Preity is not bemoaning the loss of any. When asked whether she'll miss Yuvraj, she shoots back, "Why is it always one way? He also has lost out on us. We are still friends and I wish Yuvi well. In fact, I was really happy to see him perform well in the last match that India played in the World Cup."

They occupied the wooden spoon last year but Preity is hopeful of a turnaround in 2011. "I think we should do well. If I were to play, I would come first! As long as I am not playing, I can't really comment. Not that I ever chose players for the team, but I certainly conveyed my opinion. If they wished, they agreed with me and if they didn't, they didn't."

There were murmurs of the actress packing her bags and winding up her IPL sojourn by selling off the team, but PZ stresses, "We were going to offload some stake, but not the entire team. I will never go out of it completely. To me, it's my baby that I have worked hard on and given my life to. I just can't wash my hands off it. Now it's settled and in its own zone. Let me not get stressed out about those issues."

Yes, let's not add to her stress as she readies herself for her TV debut with Guiness World Records Ab India Todega.
