MUMBAI: Australian cricketer Shaun Marsh amassed 616 runs from 11 matches at 68.44 for Kings XI Punjab in the inaugural edition of the IPL. He
was the batsman of the tournament. With boyish good looks, a killer but shy smile that made women miss a heartbeat or ten, the 26-year-old West Australian was also a massive hit with the franchisees. Why wouldn't he? He was bought for just $30,000. Boy, was that a steal? But hold on, he has a grouse against Preity Zinta, his team owner.
"I've told her I want to see some of her movies and she promised me some DVDs last year. I haven't got them yet. I'm supposed to catch up with her soon and maybe I can actually get some this time around if I'm lucky," the left-handed opening batsman said during a media session at a suburban hotel on Thursday.
Shaun, son of Australian opener Geoff Marsh, is back in the land where he made such a big name for himself in the T20 format. But this time, he will be dressed in the canary yellow uniform and be plotting the downfall of his Kings XI skipper Yuvraj Singh, in the 7-match ODI series. Is he expected to pass on some inside information on the Indian vice-captain, who is coming back from injury?
"Not really. We all know how dangerous Yuvraj can be and I'm sure all the bowlers will be getting their heads together to stop him. Hopefully, he doesn't score too many runs," Marsh, who is himself back after a hamstring injury forced him to take a five-month break, said.
Shaun has the game to score runs not just in Mohali, but all the venues, the question is will he get a chance? But that doesn't bother the southpaw. "I have come here with absolutely no expectations. I'm just happy to be selected. If I get a chance in the XI, I'll do my best," he says.
And if Shaun doesn't get an opportunity, he will have enough time to negotiate IPL offers as his success will surely make the Aussie a hot pick amongst other franchises. His response to that is a cold-blooded, "No chance of that. I'm a Kings XI Punjab man out and out. I'm playing for them in March."
Now, that's Preity solid loyalty. As a reward, can Ms Zinta hurry up with those DVDs please?
